Pumpkin Week continues! We’ve already seen some overnight oats, a miso soup, and one amazing cheesecake. What’s up next?
Yeah, so I guess the title kinda gives it away, eh?
I’ve been playing around with various smoothie combinations featuring pumpkin. Some had banana, some had protein powder, some had nut butters and some had chia seeds.
Note to self – Vega Sport Performance Vanilla protein powder, while tasty, lends a green hue to your smoothies.
All delicious in their own right, I did finally nail down a combination I’d like to share with you. The secret ingredient? Kefir! Say what? Yes, kefir. A delicious, yeasty tasting fermented dairy product. Somewhat along the lines of yogurt, but texture-wise like buttermilk. Also of note – it has a ridiculous amount of probiotics per serving, more than your yogurts. Great for keeping your gut healthy! So go drink yourself some pumpkin, mixed with a little kefir.
Pumpkin Kefir Smoothie

The quickest way to satisfy a pumpkin pie craving is with a pumpkin smoothie. Chia seeds keep it thick and creamy, while the kefir gives you a big probiotic boost. Delicious and nutritious, your tummy will thank you.
- 1/2 cup pureed pumpkin
- 1/2 cup kefir
- 1/2 cup milk (dairy or non)
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 to 1 tsp cinnamon (to your taste)
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
1. Put all ingredients in your blending machine of choice. Whiz away until smooth. For a thicker smoothie, allow it to sit for a few minutes so the chia seeds can do their thing.
Note: Can’t find kefir? Use yogurt instead!

Ooh! I am always looking for ways to enjoy kefir. Thanks for the recipe!
That smoothie sounds AWESOME! Like pumpkin pie in a glass.
yup, you sold me on the kefir – smoothie combo! ive always loved how kefir has a bit of carbonation from the healthy living bacteria, and it makes sense why that would only add to an amazing smoothie consistency and taste! when i pick up another carton of kefir i’ll definitely add some pumpkin puree and cinnamon and nutmeg etc. with banana too of course, and try out a kefir smoothie!!!
