Taste Test – Zico Chocolate Coconut Water

Last week I made a random stop into Planet Organic just to take a browse around. What can I say – window shopping in grocery stores is favourite pass time of mine. But this particular day, something caught my eye that made me part with my hard earned money.

I know, when does something chocolate not catch my eye? But look closer…

Two of my favourite flavours – chocolate and coconut – combined in Zico Chocolate Coconut Water.

It pretty much jumped into my hands, forcing me to buy it. True story, I swear!

I love coconut water. It has a great subtle coconut flavour that is very refreshing, and is considered “nature’s perfect sports drink” – packed full of the electrolytes you need to replenish after a sweaty workout, without the sugars and dyes of commercially prepared sports drinks. And even if you don’t like the taste straight up, you can use it for a base for smoothies and drinks (why not try out my Strawberry Kiwi Lime Rehydration Drink?)

All that being said, I was a little apprehensive about this one. I know chocolate and coconut are a great flavour combination, but how was that going to translate into a bottled beverage? Plus I’ve tried a couple of Zico’s flavoured coconut waters, and I haven’t been overly impressed. Upon inspecting the ingredient label, I was put a little more at ease.

If you can decipher that tiny print, you will see this isn’t simply coconut water + cocoa powder. They have added some coconut cream and carrageenan, which would act to make this a thicker, more cohesive beverage. Definitely not smoothie texture, but it would have a little more mouth feel than just the coconut water with some cocoa thrown in.

Enough with the banter. Let’s see the drink!

Check out that glass of rich chocolately goodness!

Not quite as thick and creamy as a chocolate milk, but just as enticing for sure!

So how did it taste? Excellent! The chocolate flavour takes the forefront, with the coconut playing back up. Obviously it doesn’t give you that creamy mouth feel of a chocolate milk, but it is a bit thicker than regular coconut water. This is a sweetened drink, and you can taste it, but it’s not sickly sweet. It definitely needs to be served cold from the fridge, as I think it wouldn’t be quite as pleasing at room temperature. I bet it would make a great smoothie base – throw in some frozen banana and a scoop of protein powder, and you’d be good to go.

As the drink contains cocoa, coconut cream, and cane sugar, it is more calorically dense than plain coconut water (110 kcal for the chocolate vs 60 kcal for the plain – for the full bottle), but it also has increased calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. Still a better choice than those neon coloured sports drinks for sure.

Would I buy this again? Definitely! Not for an everyday beverage, but as a delicious alternative drink for after an intense or long workout, on a hot day, or perhaps even to satisfy a chocolate craving. If you see it around, give it a go – after all, you can’t go wrong with chocolate and coconut.

Disclaimer – As stated above, I bought and paid for this with my own funds, and have not received any compensation for writing this review. But you all know that’s how I roll.

I recently discovered chocolate ZICO too, and I love it! It makes for great smoothies with frozen banana and berries. The only downside? It doesn’t have the protein/calcium of chocolate milk.

I figure that’s only a downside if you wanted to replace chocolate milk with the chocolate ZICO. But if you are solely looking for hydration, it’s good stuff. I figure not every food has to offer everything – that’s what makes eating a variety of things fun!

Ecos has an amazingly delicious dark chocolate beverage made of pure coconut water (not concentrate), virgin coconut milk (not cream from concentrate), cocoa and natural chocolate extracts (not “natural flavors” as in Zico). Ecos has a much more gourmet chocolate flavour and a richer texture, so it’s more of a delicious treat than just a flavoured coconut water. You can find it at Choices Markets, http://www.well.ca and various health food markets.
