I decided on pizza for my game day eats – I knew I had some perfect pizza veggies in the fridge that I should use up, since I won’t be home all weekend, so it was just a matter of stopping at the store on the way home to get a few other pizza essentials. Instead of going to the regular grocery store, I thought I’d hit up my favourite fun grocery store, Market On Yates. I picked up these pizza shells – Mama Mary’s Whole Wheat Pizza Crusts. Pretty good price – you get 2 in the package for $6.99.
They are a thin crust, with a nice ingredient list & good nutritionals. One serving is 1/4 of the pizza crust, and has 160 kcal, 5 g fat, 4 g fibre, and 240 mg sodium. Not bad for a packaged pizza crust! My only complaint is that since they are sold in packs of two, they should come in a resealable bag, because they are too big to fit in any Ziploc bags I have to freeze/refrigerate the extra crust!
I was planning on picking up some pepperoni, but the stuff at the deli didn’t appeal to me. So I wandered over to the meat counter, and instead grabbed a couple of spicy Italian bison sausages. I headed on home, and got to work on pizza making!
- Primo Garlic & Basil Pizza Sauce
- 2 spicy Italian bison sausages, casings removed, browned and crumbled
- 1/3 onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 small orange pepper, chopped
- 2 small portabella mushrooms, sliced
- 1/3 cup frozen spinach, thawed & drained
- shredded mozzarella
- parmesan
I spread the sauce on the crust, then topped it with a bit of mozza. Then I got to layering the rest of my toppings, and covered it with a little more mozza, and the parmesan. 12 min later in a 425 degree F oven and dinner was served!
I had my 1/4 of the pizza – 2 fair sized slices.
More gratuitous pizza shots.
As you can see, the crust is quite thin, but it’s not cardboardy – very key for me, because that’s often why I don’t like thin crust pizza. Obviously, a homemade crust would be superior, but since I still haven’t tried my hand at that, this was a great quick option 🙂
Now, I know the appropriate game day drink to go with the pizza would be beer. But frankly…I hate beer. How un-Canadian of me! So I went with my vice of choice 😉
Judge all you want. I like the stuff. I’m okay with it.
My pizza was pretty freakin’ awesome. I’ll just pause, and give myself a little pat on the back. *pats back* 😎 I’m so lame. But it was a great combination of flavours, good balance of cheese to meat to veg to sauce, all the things I’m looking for in a pizza. But I just realized, totally poor planning to make a full size pizza. I now have 6 slices left, and I’m going to be away all weekend. Oops! Guess half of it is going in the freezer.
As for that hockey game? Well, we were up 1-0 heading into the 3rd period. Then the game got really boring, as we just defended out lead. I actually may have nodded off for a few minutes. And then…Chicago scored with like, 3 min left. Ugh. We head into overtime. And we lose. Le sigh. It’s so tough being a Canucks fan sometimes. I love my team and all, but seriously? That was uncool. They had better put on a show Saturday night when I get to watch them in HD!
I got all adventuresome later on, and checked out some of Polly’s Yoga videos. I don’t really know what possessed me to do so – perhaps to calm down after the loss? Who knows. I like that they are only 10 min long – perfect for busting out between periods in a hockey game 😉 I tried the Yoga for Low Backs, because well, my low back has it’s issues. It was pleasant. I’ll have to give them all a try at some point in time.
You better believe there was snack time this evening. After seeing Sarah make a rendition of Katie’s Chocolate Mousse, and realizing a) I haven’t tried it, and b) all the necessary ingredients are in my house, it had to be done. The immersion blender got up close & personal with the following:
- 1/3 block Mori-Nu Firm Silken Tofu
- 3 large strawberries
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- splash of vanilla
- 1 tbsp unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- sprinkle of brown sugar
I topped it with a little marshmallow creme, chocolate chips, strawberry, and a graham cracker. So pretty, it’s deserves another photo.
What a great little mousse/pudding combo! I think I’ll add a little more sweetener next time – I found it had some bitter undertones, which may have been from the cocoa powder, or the strawberry seeds? But I can totally see the possibilities with this simple recipe – reese pb cup mousse? I think so!
It’s time for me to watch some news, and head to bed. Just for Erin – here’s a Sienna picture, back when she was but a wee little kitty 🙂 Enjoy!
The poor Canucks, hoping for the best Saturday! Glad you liked the pudding, I agree with the bitterness though, next time I will add sweeter fruit or some sugar.
Delicious eats. I also have a recipe for chocolate tofu mousse. It isn’t vegan but it is delightful.
Soory about the game 😦
pizza hut totally has nothing on you…you rocked that pizza! i want some!
and i hate beer too. everyone around me loves it…i stick to the hard stuff (yeahhhh patron!)
Now I want pizza!!! Yummy.
That pudding sounds great! I bet it was the cocoa powder that led to the bitterness. That always does it for me.
Heh.
🙂
Great eats!!!
Yum, yum! I love making my own pizzas and yours is awesome. I like the brightness of the orange!
Your pizza looks fantastic! I watched part of your game and I got PISSED with Chicago scored their goal – sorry 😦
UGH indeed. I’m not even a natural Canuck fan, so I can only imagine how awful it must’ve been for you– it was bad enough for me!
Reeses pb cup mousse??? Oh goodness that sounds good! (How could it not, with chocolate and pb?)
Can I feature your mousse in an upcoming post? It looks so much better than any of my mousse pictures! LOL you must just be a good food photographer, because even that non-vegetarian pizza looks good to me!
So many gret things in this post!
That pizza is off the hook! I’ve been meaning to try bison but always for get to look for it when I’m out!
Another thing I must try soon is this new tofu mousse that I’ve seen popping up everywhere. It looks very creamy and smooth….
Sienna looks like Pepper in the picture! What a dolly! 🙂
Uhhh WHY does your pizza look so much more amazing than the one i made?? To think i was so proud of it too *shame*
I also don’t judge with the diet coke. I like it too and try to control the intake of ’em, but it seriously is perfect with pizza. Who needs beer!!! All those extra calories and no positive side effects!
Go you Marianne!!!
MY BABY!!!!!!!! I LOVE HER!!!!!!! OH MY GOD SHE’S SO TINY AND CUTE!!!!!!!! HI BABY SIENNA!
How old is she?
I put up some pics of Henry on today’s post. 🙂
Dude, Diet Coke is AMAZE.
I’m so glad you finally had the pudding! It looks beautiful!
I am totally craving pizza now! Those are some impressive stats on the crust.
