New Foods Spotlight

This weekend sure has seen many new foods grace the french fries to flax seeds kitchen! They might not all be foods I haven’t tried, but they are all new visitors to my home. I thought I’d do a little feature on them, to avoid boring you with my eats from yesterday (trust me, you aren’t missing anything). Let’s take a look, shall we? 🙂

After seeing Karen rave about the Rice Works Sea Salt Crisps, I knew I had to give them a try. Lucky for me, they were on sale this week at my local grocery store – 2 for $5.00. I saw they also had Wasabi, and I love me some wasabi, so I picked those ones up as well 🙂 Some highlights of these snacks – they are Gluten Free, Vegan, Trans Fat Free, and Kosher.

On the left we have Acropolis Kuizina Tzatziki, locally made in Campbell River, BC. I’ve seen this the past few times that I’ve been to the produce market, and new I wanted to try it out. Unlike alot of commercially made tzatziki, this is made with skim milk yogurt, so it is much lower in fat that the others. It appears to have a pretty creamy texture, so I’m hoping it’s a winner! Plus it’s made on Vancouver Island, how can you not like that?

On the right we have Holy Homous Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. Now, I’ve tried their regular hummus before, and love it. I was fortunate to try this one out last night at a friend’s place, and it was awesome, so I had to purchase some today while I was out. This product is made right here in Victoria! I love the little note on the container: “Eat Soon – Buy More”.

It’s true, I’ve jumped on the agave bandwagon. I finally gave in, and bought some Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Blue Agave. What can I say, I had a weak moment when I saw it was on sale for a really good price. I actually have a recipe I’m planning on trying out that uses this, so look forward to that!

I was going through the checkout line at one of the healthy food stores this weekend, and what did I see? Pro Bar! In Canada? I had to pick one up. I went with the Sesame Goji – it sounded like an interesting sweet & savoury combination. There were a few other flavours available, but with a price tag of $4.99 per bar, one is enough for now.

This new food came to me on Friday, courtesy of Krista. She knows my love of coconut well, and hooked me up with this Stash Coconut Mango Wuyi Oolong Tea. I have actually tried this out already, and it is lovely – the aroma is amazing! Too bad I’m having a bitch of a time finding it anywhere out here! I’m going to try out the Asian grocery store when I’m home in a few weeks.

Chia seems to be one of the new “It” foods out in the blog world, so when I was wandering the health food store, this definitely caught my eye – Ruth’s Chia Goodness Original. It’s a sort of breakfast blend of chia, hemp seeds, buckwheat, and Celtic sea salt, which means it’s gluten free and vegan. It’s also a good source of Omega-3’s and fibre. It can be eaten warm or cold, so I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. There are also two flavoured varieties – Apple Almond Cinnamon and Cranberry Ginger.

Here’s some fun imported delights – Nusco Chocolate Spread from Holland. My friend gave me this jar she picked up (at the local pharmacy no less!) of this heavenly chocolate spread, because she figured she wasn’t going to eat it, and I’d enjoy it more. It was almost completely full, save for a spoonful or so that she had tasted. Like I’m going to say no to chocolate! This is so destined for a bowl of oats 😀

And last, we have a bottle of San Pellegrino Sparkling Water. After having some with my meal at La Piola this week, it reminded me of how much I enjoy a nice glass of sparkling water to fancy up a meal, especially in the summer time. What kills me is the mark up on this stuff when you order it at the restaurant – the 250mL bottle I had with dinner cost $2.50, and I bought this 750mL bottle for $1.79! Crazy!

I think that about wraps up all the fun new foods that are featured in my kitchen this week. Looks like I’ll be having some foodie fun this week!

Whoa! So many fab foods! Love the brand name on the hummus…or shall I say homous? That tea looks amazing too; coconut and mango are two of my fave foods. I’ll be interested to see what you do with that chia too, as I have a big canister waiting to be used.
