Bites + French Fries + Bowls

…but no flax seeds. At least not last night.

A little while back, I got word that a fellow blogger was making their way to the picturesque city of Victoria. After some emails & recommendations, there was a definite blogger meet up in the works! I got the official word Monday night at midnight that it was indeed on!

Who is this mystery blogger, you may ask (psst – clue is in the title)?

Why it’s Kelsey from Bites + Bowls 😀 She’s currently on a West Coast Adventure with her friend, and it sounds like it’s been rather interesting so far. Especially their arrival into Canada…but I’ll let her tell those stories 😉

I received an email upon their arrival that someone was “in desperate need of sushi – good sushi + reasonably priced”, I knew the perfect destination. After all, I do like my sushi. So we met up at my favourite little sushi restaurant, Ebizo (get a website already). And fortunately, they were able to seat us at the sushi bar – if you don’t have reservations, it’s really hit or miss if you will even get in, even on a Tuesday night!

Disclaimer – due to my camera woes, I was using a borrows & very old school digital camera, so my photos aren’t exactly up to their normal standard. But hey, at least I got some!

I started my meal with a warm bowl of miso soup – perfect for the chilly, rainy day were were having.

You can barely see my mug of green tea in the background there. It’s true, I was a teetotaler – hey, this girl had to work in the morning! My dining partners chose to test out some “local brews”. I may have yoinked a piece of zucchini tempura from them as well 😉

For my sushi, I went with two of my favourite rolls at Ebzio – dynamite roll and vegetable roll.

The dynamite roll contained a tempura prawn, avocado, and cucumber. The vegetable roll is chocked full of shiitake mushrooms, carrot, cucumber, and usually a tempura green bean, but I don’t remember if mine had one last night or not. Still awesome.

I had ordered one piece of salmon nigiri, which they originally forgot, but delivered to me shortly after.

I have to get in at least one little salmon piece when I get sushi. It’s my favourite raw fish.

I think the consensus was two thumbs up on the choice of sushi restaurant. I’ll definitely miss this place when I move.

We then took a little stroll around downtown, to point out some of the major sites on the Inner Harbour. I didn’t take any pictures myself, but I’m sure if you keep your eyes on Kelsey’s blog, you’ll see some once she’s home. There may have been some random posing with a killer whale statue 😉

Next we hit up one of the local brew pubs, as drinks were required (and on a school night!). We decided upon the Canoe Brewpub & Grill, and totally lucked out – not only was there live ska music that night, but they had a little wine tasting going on for charity. Score!

We wrangled our way into some seats at the bar, and got to ordering drinks. I went with something girly – I can’t even remember the name of the cocktail. All I know is it was rather sweet. Not bad, but I probably should have ordered a Caesar, or had some of the half priced wine instead.

Then Kelsey’s bud Wes picked up a food menu, and was concerned about this thing call “poutine”. He was skeptical that french fries, topped with cheese curds and gravy, could taste good. I assured him that this “heart attack in a bowl” was most amazing, and that he should try it out. Before you knew it, an order arrived in front of us!

There were definitely two new poutine fans at the end of the evening. Really, it was all part of their Canadian education – we explored the various figureheads on Canadian money, talked about fur traders and the Hudson’s Bay company, and mused on the metric system. See kids, learning can be fun!

I had also heard some rumblings about the mini cupcakes on the menu. And again – they just appeared. Too bad my camera wouldn’t focus so well on their cuteness.

By that point, it was time to try and take self portraits. I don’t suggest it when you aren’t familiar with the camera you are using.

You can also see why I often don’t smile when I take photos of myself : smiling = double chin. Where is the “Remove Double Chin” feature in Photoshop anyways?

Wes took a much better photo for us. Thanks!

Eventually, it was time for this girl to head home (that pesky work in the morning thing), so I dropped my new friends off at another pub, and bid adieu. Here’s hoping they continued the fun, and made it to their next destination without any crazy incidents. I’m looking forward to the recap of the evening on Bites + Bowls – hopefully they had as enjoyable a time as I did. Plus you’ll get to see some much better photography (note to self – must get a Canon SD880 – so awesome in low light & macro situations).
