Mom Comes To Town – Part One

Howdy there! It appears I’ve been a little MIA these past few days, but I have a good excuse – my mom came to visit 😀 She came into town Thursday afternoon, and we’ve been on the go ever since! This was her final visit to Victoria before I move back to the mainland, so we had to get alot in. She also brought me a car load of packing materials, and took a carload of my stuff back with her. My house looks so empty! All the art is gone off my walls, I have many empty shelves, and even an entire empty cupboard in the kitchen. Crazy!

What’s even more important – she brought me her camera to use until I get mine back 😀 So I have a crapload of pictures from this weekend. I figure it’s best if I break them up into a couple of posts, otherwise you’ll go into picture overload. Let’s start with our trip up island this Saturday 🙂

We headed out on the road on a hot Saturday morning (30+ degrees C) with a few stops in mind. First up – Organic Fair Farm & Garden in Cobble Hill, BC.

Walking down the path, you are greeted with fields of lavender.

Other herbs and plants decorate the path up to the main building.

Organic Fair not only grows & sells organic herbs, spices, and produce, but they make some of the best organic chocolate bars you will ever taste. We took the opportunity to try out almost every flavour of chocolate they had. Mom purchased 3 different bars, and I went with two – the Canadiana (maple syrup, sundried apples, and alder smoked salt) and the Cederberg (fig, rooibos, and clementine).

With our chocolate in hand, we were off to our next destination – Cherry Point Vineyards.

July2009 025

What’s a road trip up island without stopping at a winery or two for some tastings? 😀

July2009 020

July2009 022

We tried a few wines each, but I didn’t purchase any. Not because I didn’t like them, don’t get me wrong! But I’ll just end up having to move them home, so mom purchased wines that I’ll just drink when I’m there 😉

July2009 023

Unsure why my shutter wasn’t opening properly for part of the day? Perhaps it was the heat? Who knows.

Then we made an unplanned stop – I had seen a sign on the side of the road for Saskatoon berries, so I knew we had to stop. Check out the cute farm 🙂

July2009 028

It was a U-Pick farm, so we picked up a pail, and filled it about half full. A full pail would have been alot of berries!

July2009 030

Note – this is obviously before we got it filled half full 😉 At it was only $6! You better believe we washed & froze most of those berries when we got home.

Not only were there berries, but this farm makes a sparkling Saskatoon berry wine that we obviously had to test out 🙂

July2009 035

Then we made the trip up to our final destination – Coombs! They have this horribly touristy area, with some of the cheesiest statues, castles, and photo spots, but they also have one wicked market – The Old Country Market.

Not only do they have a vast array of gourmet and imported food products, but they sell dishes, toys, knick knacks, etc. There was an awesome bowl I wanted to buy, but you know, that whole moving thing stopped me from it. I’m sure my bank account appreciated it.

Another unique thing about the market? The roof is covered in grass, and there are goats that live up there!

We explored the grounds some more, checking out the gardening centre.

July2009 057

Remember how I said it was one hot day out? Well, that turned out to be a good things, since you can’t go to Coombs without getting some amazing ice cream.

July2009 061

So many flavours to choose from! I ordered what they call a single cone, with some Chocolate Peanut Butter and Kahlua & Cream. Seriously, does this look like a single cone to you?

July2009 062

Mom also went with a single – I believe she chose Rocky Mountain Raspberry and Mango Delight.

July2009 063

You gotta eat those bad boys fast when it’s that hot out! I managed to not wear any 🙂

Then it was time to make the long drive back to Victoria. But not before getting a little reusable souvenir 🙂

July2009 064

They were too cute to pass up!

You’d think after all that fun, sun, and ice cream, we would have been completely spent. But no…there was more! You’ll have to stay tuned for Mom Comes To Town – Part Two 😉

PS – It’s time to start the one month countdown to my 30th birthday! I wanted to give you all adequate shopping time 😉

What a day!! I love the looks/sound of those chocolate bars. Very creative ingredients for sure!

Lavender is one of my favourites to plant in the garden. It probably helps that purple is my favourite colour.

Holy ice cream! I think I like the sounds of your flavours better than your Mom’s although they both look great.

Can’t wait to see the rest of the picture’s. Can you top the goats on the roof? Too cool! 🙂
