The First Day Back

Hey there everyone! Sorry for no post yesterday. I really wanted to give you the run down of my first day back at school, but a) our internet was not behaving, and b) I was completely wiped out. Speaking of internet problems, I have no clue when this one might even post either. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

So are you ready for the run down? Let’s go!

6:15 am – wake up

6:30 am – eat breakfast

What was for breakfast you may ask?

Why this amazing bowl of oats, that’s what! I had been inspired by K’s swirly melty chocolate oats, and knew I wanted to start my school year off right with a bowl of my own.

Into the bowl went:

  • 1/2 cup oats, milk, water
  • splash of vanilla
  • 1 tbsp flax seed
  • peanut butter
  • Artisana Cacao Bliss

It was super basic (we had no bananas), and super delicious.

To go with the oats, I had a mini pear.

And a glass of Happy Planet Mango Peach Party.

Too bad I now have to eat breakfast while it’s still dark out!

Anyways, back to my day…

6:45 – 7:20 am – beautify, pack bag, etc

7:20 am – hitch a ride with my sister on her way to work so I can catch the train

7:45 am – get on packed train, which fortunately empties two stops later (all the kids going to my old University)

8:20 am (ish) – get off train, get in line for bus. Miss first bus (too many people), get on 2nd bus, and score a seat.

8:54 am – arrive at school

There were no classes the first day of school. We have what is called “Imagine Day”, which is basically a big orientation day, especially for first year students. I saw them all out with their tour groups roaming the campus. I took the opportunity to orient myself on campus, pick up my student ID, and find all the buildings I need for the coming year. At 10:00, I was headed to session to meet the dean of our faculty. There were maybe 6 of us in the lecture hall, and no one ever showed up. We found out later that they had changed the room, but it was never changed on the schedule on the website. So I have no clue how all the other people managed to find it. Whatever.

Then at 11:30, I went to the highlight of my day – the dietetics roundtable session. They had 5 student volunteers come in and talk to us about their experiences, backgrounds, etc in the dietetics program. We also had the opportunity to ask questions of each of the students. I found it to be extremely valuable, and really helped me put into perspective what they are looking for in applicants to the program. It actually made me feel alot more confident in my potential to get into the program as well, just based on my own school/work/volunteer history. I still need to put together a rockin’ application package come February, but I think I can do it. They also really helped me focus on what I should be looking for in volunteer positions to strengthen my application, and I’m already working on it.

12:30 pm – Faculty Welcome BBQ!

Our faculty put on a welcome BBQ out in front of our building, so of course I partook. I was hanging out with some new people, so I didn’t whip out the camera to take photos of my eats. Trust me, you didn’t miss much. It was a beef burger with mustard & ketchup on a sesame bun. They had run out of lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes by the time I got there. I also had some baby carrots, and a few chips. And I grabbed an apple, but never ate it.

I had planned on going home after the BBQ, but there was what they call the “Main Mall Carnival” going on at 2 pm, so I figured I would stay, browse the booths, then head on out of there in an attempt to beat rush hour home. There was alot to take in – I think every club, student organization, and service was represented there. I did get to sign up for the volunteer list for the UBC Food Bank though, and scored some free swag.

Not many things to note, other than the cute little cactus 😀 I was kinda excited to get that.

3:10 pm (ish) – start the trek home from school

4:20 pm – arrive at my sister’s work, and hitch a ride home

The timing worked out perfectly so I didn’t have to bus all the way home. Woohoo!

Then I stopped paying attention to what time it was 😉

I spent some time in the hot tub before dinner – I had sore feet from walking around that big ol’ campus all day. Then it was time to eat.

My mom’s crispy chicken – she coats it in crushed saltines. An old family favourite.

Steamed potatoes. For some reason, they are missing their jackets. I’m not really sure why they were peeled. Oh well.

And some steamed broccoli and green beans. Which were also steaming up my camera.

I spent the rest of the evening relaxing, watching some tv, and having a little dessert.

The last, lonely slice of the blueberry no-bake cheesecake. It was divine.

And I even made it to bed by 11:00. I had an early wake up call coming. UGH.

    You are truly amazing! These photos just go to show how fantastic you are that you include this kind of diet in your daily routine! We love healthy whole foods and am sorry about your sore feet. Ouch. I should tell you that our family loves to use the Topricin natural foot cream. It helps so much for sore feet! Best of luck, great blog 🙂
