Saturdays Aren’t School Days

And yet, I was up early and out the door to head to the university. The first week of school, and already I’m down to one day weekends?! Tell me this isn’t a sign of things to come!

I wasn’t in a real rush this morning, but wasn’t feeling a big bowl of oats – probably because it was so warm today. So I went with cereal.

Nature’s Path Pumpkin Raisin Crunch cereal, straight up with milk.

With a side of pomegranate cranberry juice.

Why was I off to the school on a Saturday? I had my training session for my volunteer position at Sprouts, the organic/local cafe/store/bulk buying co-op on campus. It was pretty straight forward, and I think it will be an interesting experience. Hopefully I’ll meet some new people along the way as well. And we get discounts on store merchandise – Bonus!

I packed a little lunch to take with me, as training was right over lunch time.

food2 960

My leftover half sandwich from last night’s dinner (cheddar, avocado, pesto, lettuce, honey mustard dressing), cucumber slices, and a whack of red grapes

Only the grapes played nice for close ups.

I haven’t had grapes in so long – they were delightful 🙂

I figured since I was making the trek all the way to school, I’d take the opportunity to stop by Whole Foods on the way home. The big, new store just happens to be on my bus route to the train. How can I not visit every once in a while? I did have a reason for stopping though – in my efforts to avoid starvation on my 12 hour days away from home, I’ve decided to mix up some custom trail/snack mix. I wanted to visit the bulk bins at Whole Foods, since they have a bunch of awesome add ins I can’t get at my local stores. Of course, I purchased other things not on the list, but I didn’t go over board. I also grabbed a delicious raspberry oatmeal muffin from their bakery for the rest of the trip back to the ‘burbs.

Photo taken covertly in my reusable grocery bag on the train. I spy a puffin in the background 😉

I was a sweaty, tired mess by the time I got home – it was hot out today, and the bus was not the place to be hanging out. I considered going to the gym, but it wasn’t in the cards. So I chilled with the family, and enjoyed dinner.

Turns out no one felt like cooking, so take out Chinese food was on the menu. My dad was very considerate – he asked me if I wanted him to order an extra vegetable dish to go with the usual dishes they always order. Thanks dad!

So, what all was there? Sweet & sour pork.

food2 968

Beef & snow peas (instead of the usual broccoli).

food2 966

Chicken chow mein and pork fried rice.

food2 969

Almond gai ding (my choice for the 2nd vegetable dish).

food2 967

And my sister’s favourite, breaded almond chicken (which also refused a close up).

I had declared this evening “school free”, so I spent some time reorganizing my room. I still had some boxes from when I moved that I never unpacked/found homes for, and it was driving me nuts. The only thing left to do in there now is put some of my artwork back up – the walls are so naked!

I also made treats.

food2 973

I threw together a batch of ED&BV Nicer Krispie Squares, made with puffed rice & puffed kamut like last time. Obviously, I needed to taste test one for dessert.

food2 972

Just as good as the last time I made them. Mom enjoyed them as well 🙂

I’ve also been working on getting that Google Reader down. I know the more we get into the semester, the less time I’ll have to keep up.

Time for me to peace out. Night!

Great looking plate of Chinese food!

Sprouts sounds like it’ll be a cool place to work. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

Good for you, take a break from school for a day! You deserve it. That’s so great that the Whole Foods is right on your bus route, you really can’t beat that as far as convenience is concerned!
The Chinese food looks fantastic. I love Sweet and Sour Pork, it’s my favorite Chinese dish, other than maybe Wonton Soup.
