Recently on Twitter I saw a little tweet from Genuine Health – makers of the greens+ line of products – asking if anyone wanted to win a pH kit and some greens+ extra energy. All you had to do was tweet them to tell them why you wanted to win. Well, this was just after the Olympics ended, and let me tell you, my energy was zapped. I figured, hey, why not tweet and see if I win. Lo and behold – I received a message back asking for my address! A week or so later, and this package showed up on my door.
The pH kit and greens+ extra energy, as well as a shaker cup and t-shirt. Cool!
The greens+ line has intrigued me for some time. I would always see them in the natural/health foods section of the grocery store, and often saw people buying them. I did some research on their company, and found out they are based in Canada – bonus points! From looking at the greens+ formula, I think it’s somewhat similar to the ever popular Amazing Grass Green Superfood blend.
Toady was the day I decided to start taking the greens+ extra energy. In the documentation provided, they say to test your pH with the kit for 5 days, 3 times a day, so you can get a baseline before you start taking the product. I faithfully peed on the litmus paper for those 5 days, and was ready to go this morning!
As an aside – I don’t know how much science there is in the whole pH thing. I haven’t looked into it in depth, but figured it would be interesting to see if there even is a change from taking this.
Anyways, this morning I was greeted with a greenish-brown powder.
Mmmmm. Meh, it wasn’t bad enough to turn me off taking it.
Per the instructions, I mixed up 1 tsp of the powder with 1 cup of water. The full “dose” is supposed to be 3 tsp, but they say to ease yourself into it starting with 1 tsp. Apparently you may experience loose bowel movements – something I really look forward to, especially considering the amount of time I spend on transit.
It looks frothy because I shook that shaker cup up good! Otherwise, it’s a pleasant swamp green colour.
The flavour I was sent is “Natural Orange”. I don’t know if I agree with the natural part. Tastes like orange flavoured stuff (candies, popsicles) to me. And because it’s made with stevia, it has that stevia aftertaste that I’m generally not a huge fan of. But again, it wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t drink the whole thing, and it does sort of grow on you as you drink it. Kind of like when I add kale to green smoothies 😉 They do mention mixing it with some apple juice if you want, so I might try that out next time. Or maybe even go totally wild and crazy and throw it into a smoothie!
Have I felt any different so far? Hard to say – I had a horrible sleep last night, so I’m tired today. Plus I only had 1/3 of the “normal” serving, so perhaps I will wait until I’ve advanced to the full meal deal to form any opinion.
I’ll be sure to keep you update on my greens+ extra energy experiment!
I can’t wait to see this experiment – I keep thinking of adding greens to my lacking diet.
I also live in Canada and I have seen that brand several times in the grocery stores and at Shoppers Drug Mart. I am curious about your experiment!
I remember this line from when I worked in Nature’s Fare, but I was always way too chicken to try it.
But what does the energy come from? I feel like it was some ridiculous caffein additives… But if I’m wrong I’d love to know what the actual ingredients are.
you are a brave one!! i’ve had greens+ a few times and i can’t handle it. i guess i could throw it into my green smoothie and not notice (which is what i do with AG every now and then) but straight up with just water is far too hardcore for me.
i’ve had the plain, many years ago, which i thought was terrible (though might have different ideas now) and the mixed berry last summer, which was absolutely disgusting. i wonder how orange compares.
