From One Extreme To Another

So yesterday was a dreary, rainy day. I expected much of the same this morning, as the weather was supposed to be rainy all week. Instead what I woke up to was sunshine and warmth. Too bad it didn’t stick around.

I was determined to get the gym this morning before work. You’d think that wouldn’t be a problem, considering my shift wasn’t until noon, but I have a habit of sleeping in, and wasting time in the mornings. But not this morning. I was out of bed and ready to go in no time flat.

I’ve also discovered the perfect way to consume the Vega Shake & Go Smoothie (Vanilla Almondilla flavour) I was sent to try out – mixed with almond milk.

The first time I tried it, I just mixed it with water, as that’s what the package said to do. Although it was tasty, I wasn’t sold on the consistency. But if you mix it with a cup of almond milk instead, you get a creamy, delicious treat. It almost looks like a vanilla bean studded milk shake.

And it made the perfect pre-workout snack. I knew I couldn’t go to the gym without consuming anything, but to have a whole breakfast would have required too much digestion time. This was great as it gave me some fuel, and was hydrating at the same time. I like smoothies for that reason.

After my quick and efficient gym stint, I came home to have my real breakfast.

Two slices of Silver Hills sprouted grain bread, toasted, and topped with peanut butter, Western Sage Cinnamon Creamed Honey, and banana.

On its own, the cinnamon creamed honey is pretty powerful. But with some peanut butter, it keeps that cinnamon flavour in check. Plus it looks cool all swirled together. Which you can only kind of see in this picture.

The house was empty, so I enjoyed some tunes and leisure time before getting ready for work. A 6 hour shift requires one to pack a lunch. I went with a snacky type lunch, including raw veggies and a stick of bison pepperoni.

IMG_7682

A Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar. One of my top 3 flavours for sure. Perhaps even number 1.

IMG_7683

A small gala apple.

Plus a blob of hummus for dipping those veggies in.

So when I went to work, it was a beautiful sunny day. I drove there with the windows down and sunroof open. But as my shift went on, the weather did a complete 180. The clouds came in, the wind picked up, and the rain starting falling. Our power did some serious flickering – we were all surprised it never went out. When it was time to come home, it was still pouring, and I hadn’t brought a jacket. It’s days like those when you wished you didn’t have to park in the employee lot.

Dad was the master mind behind dinner tonight. And by mastermind, I mean he came up with the idea, and did the purchasing, but he definitely wasn’t involved in the cooking (no offense dad). He stopped into a little British butcher shop while he was out, and picked up some steak and mushroom meat pies.

IMG_7692

These things were huge, and packed to the brim with chunks of steak and mushrooms. Not one of those mostly gravy filled pies, that’s for sure.

He also requested salad.

And mom steamed up some broccoli, which I of course topped with a little cheddar.

IMG_7687

Turned out to be a pretty tasty little meal. Good thing my sister wasn’t home – she hates mushrooms!

IMG_7691

Since our power didn’t go out, we were able to watch all of our favourite shows on tv, and enjoy some more strawberry rhubarb crumble.

IMG_7693

Oh sure, we could still enjoy the crumble in the dark, but then we wouldn’t be able to see how awesome it is.

IMG_7695

There may have been a little chocolate ending to my evening as well. When dad was at the British butcher shop, he picked up some British treats. I believe these are just called Penguins.

IMG_7700

It’s basically a chocolate cookie, with a creamy chocolate filling, coated in chocolate. And if I had been thinking, I would have taken a photo to show you. Oops! If you’ve ever had a Tim Tam, they are similar to that. Mmmm, Tim Tams. Takes me back to Australia…but I digress.

This evening, I shall leave you with the little joke on the back of the Penguin. Come back tomorrow for the punch line. Night!

oh i totally agree about smoothies and veg in particular before a workout! sometimes i remember having to add banana to my green vega packs to create a better consistency, but almond milk would be just as good! yea sometimes the water just doesnt cut it.

i still cant get over how delicious that crumble looks. crumbles are quite healthy and they dont leave that heavy feeling uno? big fan of any cooked or stewed fruit too.

my power did some flickering too! it always does when its any amount of wind in general.

    have a great day!

Okay, I’ve been seeing these particular Vega products around the blog world so much and hearing such good reviews that I think it’s time I check it out.

The Penguin chocolate bar looks cute! I’m a sucker for pretty/interesting packaging.

Our weather has been really gloomy too and it was SO windy last night and this morning too. I’m hoping that the power stays on.. or.. maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if it went out. I need a break from technology.

Haha, my dad is a similar sort of mastermind in the kitchen–he picks out an idea and buys the ingredients but expects me to prepare it all!

I haven’t had a pot pie in AGES!
