Get ‘Em While They Last

It’s that time…look what we have in stock at work!

Local BC strawberries! I may have been a little more than excited to see them, especially being sold at my grocery store. Most major grocery stores won’t stock them, because of their short shelf life and limited quantity. But if you’re lucky, you too can get 2 1/2 lbs of sweet BC strawberries at your local Thrifty Foods.

Sure, they may cost a few more dollars than the California berries, but one taste, and you’ll know it was worth it. Support your local farmers!

I’m sure you can already guess what I featured in my breakfast this morning.

When I woke up, I sounded like a dying frog. My throat was bad. I knew a bowl of blended, warm, soothing oatmeal was in order. Plus it was still freakin’ raining out. Oats were a necessity.

Cook the above, blend them with the immersion blender. Put pot back on stove, and add a few chopped strawberries to heat. Top with the following:

  • sliced strawberries
  • Artisana coconut butter
  • hemp seeds

A sore throat requires liquids – in the form of orange peach mango juice. In the tiniest glass we have, as all the others were in the dishwasher.

Screw the rain, my breakfast screams summer.

Eventually my croak subsided somewhat, so I was left with just the “throaty, sexy voice”. At least that’s what I told myself. I decided to make myself somewhat presentable, and take a trip down to the mall. I ended up leaving with a new shirt and jacket. The jacket I scored on clearance for $20 – woot! I also made a stop at the grocery store to satisfy a craving…for ramen!

I guess I was having a sodium deficient moment or something, but I just really wanted a bowl of ramen noodles. Mushroom flavoured, to be exact, which is not the easiest one to find. But Safeway came through – in fact, their house brand had slightly better nutritional stats than the name brand one, including almost half the amount of sodium, plus it was a whopping 7 cents cheaper. A win – win if I’ve ever heard one.

You may notice the lack of broth (and lack of any appealing colour). I like to cook the ramen, then just remove the noodles, and mix in about half of the flavour packet, and eat it as is. Sometimes, you just want tasty noodles.

I had plans to go out this evening, but they were kiboshed (who uses that word?!) due to my sexy voice and my friend’s stomach ache. In fact, I had 3 nights where I was supposed to go out for dinner in the next 5 days, and 2 of them have been cancelled. Although it sucks, I look at it as an opportunity to save some money. Even if I had a new outfit to wear out tonight.

At some point in time, the sun reappeared from behind the rain clouds, which just called for a dinner cooked on the BBQ.

Burgers on the BBQ to be exact. I had mine with red onion, dill pickle, lettuce, dijon, mayo, and Little Qualicum Cheeseworks Fromage Frais, all in a whole wheat bun.

We also had a spinach, red onion, and strawberry salad, with some Mango Sesame Dressing.

So summery. Gotta love it.

All that late evening sunshine forced me to stop playing the “I’m sick” card, and I went out for a nice walk around the ‘hood. When I got back, it was time to sip on some hot water/honey/lemon for my throat, and to enjoy a little evening snack.

A slice of Silver Hills Wheat Free Chia Bread, topped with peanut butter, coconut, and chocolate chips. The slices are the perfect size when you want a little something something.

I’m now into my second honey & lemon tonight.  I better pace myself! Off to do some reading. Night!

I haven’t had ramen noodles since college! And I used to drain the liquid, too. HA! Sorry to hear your throat is still bothering you. Wonder if a trip to the doctor is in order??
I just scored some Ontario strawberries at the market today and they are like sugar! 🙂
