Shopping & Refuelling

Happy Tuesday everyone! Well…technically, it’s Wednesday, but whatever. I hope you all had an excellent day. I sure did – mostly because it was a day off from work, and I got to spend it with a good friend of mine 🙂

It all started off this morning, when I decided that sleeping in a little while longer trumped getting to the gym. I was going to be walking around all over Vancouver today anyways, so it’s not like I wasn’t going to get any movement in today.

Breakfast was big, fruity, and delicious.

I decided to reprise my mango and strawberry combination from Saturday in a bowl of cereal.

IMG_8342

Kashi Honey Puffed and Honey Almond Flax cereal, combined with 1/2 mango, sliced local strawberries, almond milk, and a generous drizzle of peanut butter.

It was pretty enough to warrant gratuitous photography.

Plus a glass of the pomegranate berry juice.

Don’t you just wish you could have a bite?

After that bowl of awesomeness, I made myself presentable, and set out on a couple of errands before meeting up with my friend at her house. We took transit down to the shopping district on West 4th Avenue in Vancouver, where we promptly grabbed some Starbucks (iced green tea latte), so we would look like total west end yuppies whilst shopping. We walked up and down the street, ducking into any stores that piqued our interest – mainly clothing, jewellery, and kitchen/houseware stores. Although I found many items to drool over, and tried on many items of clothing, nothing was quite right, and I sadly came away from the day empty handed.

Fortunately, I knew I would have success at our dinner location of choice – Refuel.

IMG_8349

Refuel actually used to be known as Fuel – a more upscale, fine dining restaurant. But as the economy slowed, it was reborn as Refuel, where you can get fresh, local ingredients prepared without all the frills of fine dining, and without losing anything in the taste department. They also do their own butchering and make their own charcuterie.

We were there rather early for dinner, but it was okay, since neither of us had a true lunch. Plus it meant we had the full attention of the service staff, who were excellent.

Whilst we perused the menus, deciding on our meals, we enjoyed our drinks. I went with a bottle of sparkling mineral water.

IMG_8352

I had thought going into the restaurant that I wanted to order the wild BC salmon and spot prawns, but changed my mind when my friend decided to order that. Instead, I went the comfort food route.

IMG_8354

Oh yes, I went with the Buttermilk Polderside Fried Chicken, with jalapeno biscuit, gravy, and coleslaw. My server informed me that the chicken was actually cooked sous-vide, and spent very little time in the fryer, making for crispy, but not greasy, product. He must have sensed my pending career in dietetics 😉

IMG_8356

I was pleasantly surprised when my meal was presented to me, because 1) the coleslaw was dressed in a vinaigrette, not mayo (love!), and 2) that I had not 1, not 2, but 3 pieces of golden brown chicken.

IMG_8355

I am not a fried chicken connoisseur by any means. In fact, I don’t even know when the last time I ate a piece of fried chicken was. It was probably of the KFC variety though, and I just do not like that stuff. But this was delicious. A thin, lightly seasoned, crispy coating surrounded perfectly cooked, moist, tender chicken from an SPCA-certified farm. The coleslaw was crunchy and refreshing, and the biscuit was buttery, flakey, and studded with fresh jalapenos – and super tasty when dunked in the gravy 🙂

I had two of the three chicken pieces (taking the 3rd home with me), as I needed to save room for dessert.

It was no surprise that I went with the Peanut & Chocolate Parfait with honeycomb. The rhubarb crisp was tempting, but my friend ordered that, so we could share bites.

IMG_8359

Hello chocolate! But wait – the side view is better.

IMG_8360

Layers of peanut butter and chocolate mousse(?), topped with crunchy honeycomb, vanilla ice cream, and rich, dark chocolate. I think the only word required to describe this is foodgasm. Nary a crumb was left, and my belly was happy.

My friend and I were both immensely pleased with our dining experience at Refuel, both in the quality of the food and in the service. I have no doubt that I will be back there one day, as there is so much more to enjoy!

We made our way back to the ‘burbs, with a side trip down Commercial Drive so I could pick up a specific item at a specific store, then we went back to her house and chatted for awhile before calling it a night. It’s a shame our schedules don’t often mesh, as it’s always a good time when we do get together. Such is the life of two busy adults though, eh?

And that, my friends, is all for tonight. I’m off to bed to dream of that dessert. You should enter my giveaway. Night!

Your dessert looks heavenly! I haven’t heard of Refuel but the concept sounds great. I love west 4th but usually just end up browsing as it is so expensive.
