(Almost) Blind Date

Let me set the scene for you…

Date: October 7, 2010

Location: Marcello Pizzeria & Ristorante

Guests: 9 bloggers, most from Vancouver, all of whom I had never met, and actually had never read their blogs before. Eek!

I had received an email awhile back from Liane (Running For Wine). Along with Amber (Girl With The Red Hair), she was organizing a Vancouver blogger meet up. Somehow my email found it’s way onto the list of invitees, and I decided to go. Because let’s be honest, there should have been a blogger meet up here in Van-City a long time ago. Plus I’m always up for going out for dinner in the city 🙂

I was a bit bummed that I wasn’t overly familiar with all the bloggers there, and that I had never really “talked” to any of them before hand. Not that I thought they’d be weird or creepy, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone with whom you are familiar. Plus it seemed like many of them knew each quite well. But I wasn’t going to let that keep me from some fun.

I made my way out to the restaurant Thursday evening, and even arrived early. I swear, I’m always running late when I have to get somewhere in town, as I underestimate how long it takes to get everywhere. They had seated us in the back of the restaurant, and I was delighted to see semi-decent lighting for food photography purposes. Soon enough everyone was around the table, conversation was flowing, and food was ordered.

I think pretty much everyone started with a salad. I had a Caesar. Because I love Caesar salad.

Creamy, garlicky, and not overly dressed. Just the way I like my Caesars…salads that is. Especially when they come with a giant wedge of foccacia bread (also rather delicious).

While the majority of the table decided to share gargantuan wood-fired pizzas, I had become fixated on one menu item – the Quattro Formaggi Gnocchi. Being a cheese fiend, it was pretty much a given. Plus seriously, how often do I eat gnocchi? Exactly.

This was the small order. I fear what the large order would have looked like. As it was, I ate half, and was pleasantly full. The gnocchi were little pillowy bites covered in a rich cheese sauce. Seemingly simple, but sometimes that’s the way to go.

Deep in conversation…and pizza.

Mandatory group shot.

From left to right: Lysa (Red Spotted Patch), Lisa (Lisa’s Yarns – our guest American blogger!), Amber (Girl With The Red Hair), Hillary (Two L’s Please), Sarah (A Little Bit Magic), Leah (Why Deprive?), Liane (Running For Wine), and Keri (Iron Mountain Movement).

We joked after our meal that we needed a fro-yo place to go to, because all the food blogger meet ups seem to end up there. HA! Actually, if we all hadn’t been full, a trip over to La Casa Gelato would have been great.

Although I felt a bit awkward (none of your fault ladies – “it’s not you, it’s me”) because I didn’t really know anyone going into the dinner, it was still fun. And great to be out with a group of bloggers with all different backgrounds. I just wish we could have facilitated more mingling. Sadly, the table setting didn’t overly allow for it. Perhaps we needed to instil a round of musical chairs? And after the fact, I found out that Leah and I have a friend in common. Small world. Where was that icebreaker when I needed it?

Oh yeah – and my leftover gnocchi made for an excellent lunch today…that I fully ate in the car on the way home from school. While I was driving. With a fork even. I can only imagine what the people on the bus beside me thought.

I’d kinda like to organize another Vancouver blogger meet up…anyone interested?

Hey Marianne! I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now and would love to be part of any future meetups! I was asked to go to that one but I live on the Sunshine Coast and sometimes it makes it hard to get into Vancouver so I had to decline. It looks awesome thttps://frenchfriestoflaxseeds.wordpress.com/wp-admin/profile.phphough! My one and only blogger meetup so far was actually with Leah. 🙂

What a great meet-up! I had a similar “blind” date experience at a local food blogger meet-up last November–I knew only one of the attendees!

It;s funny that you didn’t know any of the bloggers because when I first read about this on Amber’s blog, I thought “Wow! Who are all these people? Why have I never read about them!?!” lol

Clearly, I have some blogs to catch up on! 😉

BTW, that pasta looks delish. There’s nothing like a well made gnocchi. Fluffy like clouds.

Keep me in the loop for a Van city meet-up. If I’m in the neighbourhood, you know I”ll be there!!!!

It was nice to meet you! Great photos 🙂

    That gnocchi looks incredible!

And I feel ya – it’s so hard with blogger meet ups sometimes when it’s at a nice sit down place like that, because you’re pretty much limited to whoever is at your table and right next to/ across from you. There was one meet up I went to in Orlando and there were several bloggers I was really looking forward to meeting that I didn’t get to chat much with because they were at a completely different table!

Hopefully you guys can meet up again in a more casual/ mingle-friendly locale. 🙂

How weird that we both know Kortney eh?
It was great to meet you, even if we didnt get much chance to chat.

Ok, now I’m jealous to learn you work at Thrifty’s. I love that place. I could happily live in a Thrifty’s and never leave 🙂
