Girl’s Night

Saturday night had the rare opportunity to do some entertaining, with one of my oldest friends coming over a good ol’ fashioned girl’s night. We’ve known each other since kindergarten – went to school together, went to university together, travelled across the country together, and were in Brownies and Guides together. Lots of memories, lots of inside jokes, and lots of fun over the years. Living in Victoria, we sort of lost touch a little, but now that I’m back at home, I’m able to get together with my old friends more often.

We realized this past summer that we are both big fans of Rock Band, so we decided to have a Rock Band night at my house. I was in charge of the food, and she would bring the drinks. I figured it would be best to balance out those martinis with a spread of colourful, delicious, and relatively nutritious snacks.

Nothing too complicated, as I had to work most of the day. I whipped up a spinach and artichoke hummus, as well as some kick ass tzatziki (recipe courtesy of my Food Theory Lab). Seriously, I will never buy tzatziki again, because this was so easy and so good.

Some flax and multigrain pita wedges, dried apricots, and medjool dates.

Carrot, cucumbers, sweet peppers and juicy red grapes.

And a little sweet treat to share – Hedgehog Slice, courtesy of my bakery at work. It’s not a girl’s night with out a little chocolate 😉

The bowl of pretzels were added at the last minute, just in case we needed a little something extra to nibble on/scoop up the delicious spreads.

Proof entertaining need not be complicated, and that you can have a tasty spread without compromising on your healthy eating goals. Even with a few beverages thrown in 😉

What’s your favourite healthy party snack to serve or bring?

I am a bit fan of serving antipasto with cheese, meats, olives etc.

The Hedgehog Slice looks so decadent!

I love a good plate of veggies with hummus or salsa or antipasto, or some other delicious dip. Hmmm I really want to make that tzatziki dip soon. It was sooo good.
