Up And Coming

Although I have been MIA for awhile, it doesn’t mean that bloggable things haven’t been happening in my world. Au contraire, mes amis! I have been busy setting myself up for a multitude of fun events and activities in the next few months. I thought I would share with you a few of these things, because chances are I will be blogging about each of them as they come up. Gives you and me something to look forward to!


1. Some foods to review.

I took a quick trip down to the States at the end of April (the day before my last final – shhh, don’t tell!), and of course I had to pick up a variety of food items to test out.


We may have bought a lot of cereal. I’m most excited for the new flavours of Puffinsmultigrain and peanut butter & chocolate.


Hazelnut milk – okay, so I bought this last time I was in the States, but it’s just so damn good it needs a mention.


A few select food bar flavours that I can’t get here in Canada.


Including the new Blueberry Muffin Larabar. I’m intrigued by this flavour – although I’m not big on the fruit flavoured Larabars, I’m willing to give them all a chance.


The infamous Sin Dawg by Dave’s Killer Bread. I’ve heard so many proclaim its awesomeness, I had to buy one (even if it was $6!).


And a bottle of KeVita Coconut Probiotic Drink – a coconut water & kefir based beverage. Looked interesting, and it’s coconut, so it has to be good, right?



2. Hockey playoffs!!!


Not only are my beloved Vancouver Canucks the top team in the league after the regular season, they are on the verge of moving through to the 3rd round. This city is amped!


3. Developing a Student Directed Seminar course for next year.

Yes, I somehow ended up joining two of my fellow dietetics students in developing and facilitating a Student Directed Seminar on Private Practice Dietetics for the upcoming school year. We are still in the midst of writing the proposal, which is a lot of work, and don’t know if we will have the seminar accepted, but if we do, it will be a very interesting learning experience. Not only will I get to take the course for credits, but I will also be facilitating the delivery of the course. Keep your fingers crossed!


4. Raw foods “cooking” class.

I lucked out and grabbed a great deal on Ethical Deal (one of those social/group buying websites like Groupon, etc – there are so many out there!), for a 3 hour Raw Vegan Cooking Class & Dinner at Indigo Food. We’ll be covering a variety of items, like nut milks, fermented drinks, nut cheeses, kale chips, salads, smoothies, desserts, and more. I’m so excited – any opportunity to learn about different cooking styles is great, and I hope it gives me the motivation to explore more raw cuisine on my own. Chances are it will just make me want to buy expensive kitchen appliances like a dehydrator and high-power blender. Ah well.


5.  New cookbook to add to the collection.


Not that I need any more cookbooks, but I couldn’t not buy the latest cookbook from Dietitians of CanadaCook! The theme of the book is “celebrating food from field to table”, which is something I can get behind. It has a lot of practical cooking information and great looking recipes in there – many from dietitians I’ve been getting to know through my schooling. I see plenty of cooking in my near future. And I have to admit – I would like to get some recipes published in future editions.


6. Speaking of Dietitians of Canada…


…I will be attending the Dietitians of Canada National Conference this June in Edmonton, Alberta. So excited for this opportunity as well. Not only is it relatively close to home, but there are so many interesting looking sessions and events to attend. Some of the highlights I have signed up for include a farm tour, the student social dinner, and seminars on food insecurity, traditional aboriginal foods, and dietitians and the media. So far I’m the only one from my class going, but I’m still hoping someone else will go with me, because not only would it be more fun, but it would also cut down on my hotel costs. If anyone knows of a great, inexpensive place to stay in Downtown Edmonton, let me know!


7. Concert season is approaching…

I do love my music, so although it’s not food related, I still want to share. I just picked up tickets to see Kings of Leon in September, and today they just announced that Soundgarden and Queens of the Stoneage are coming at the end of July. If all goes according to plan, I will also have tickets to that show by this time next week. I’m also hoping for tours by Foo Fighters and City and Colour, as both will have new albums to tour behind. So much potential for great shows in Vancity!


As you can see, there is always something going on around here. But right now I feel like it’s a good kind of busy. The kind of busy that doesn’t leave me feeling like I have no time for myself, for the blog, for working out, and for the important people in my life. It’s like after 4 months of intense school focus I finally have some sort of balance, and let me tell you, it feels great.
