I’m gonna be honest – I was starting to think summer weather was never going to arrive here in Vancouver. We have had so many cool, cloudy, rainy days leading up to July, it seemed like we were just going to skip on through from spring to fall. But just when all hope was almost lost, it happened – summer arrived!
As luck would have it, I booked a 4 day weekend off from work, right when summer made its appearance. I made sure to get up to all sorts of fun – dinners out, gatherings with friends and family, BBQ’s, walks, etc. Today was the last of those 4 days, and I decided while everyone was at work, I would pack up my things and head on out to the beach.
Sadly none of the true beaches are near my house, so I had to decide if I wanted to brave driving through downtown Vancouver or heading south across the river. Since I knew I’d be coming back during rush hour, it would be insanity to head into Vancouver. So off to South Surrey I went!
A recent discovery of mine (thanks to a dear new friend) is the laid back beauty that is Crescent Beach and Blackie Spit Park. Just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of White Rock beach you find the Crescent Beach area. There are a lot fewer businesses, no pay parking, tons of cute beach homes, and a more natural setting than over at White Rock. Seemed like the perfect choice for some quality me time in the sun.
I packed up a little lunch to take with me.
Leftover grilled chicken made into a sandwich.
Some juicy and refreshing watermelon and green grapes.
Oh, and I stopped for a cold beverage en route (unsweetened green tea lemonade).
I pulled up a bench with a view, spread out my beach towel (covered up the bird poop), and just enjoyed my surroundings.
Hoping to get a little colour on my albino skin.
After enjoying my leisurely lunch, I decided to stroll around and take some photos.
My wandering eventually led me over to the main beach, where I had to splurge on some gelato.
You can’t go to the beach and not have an ice cream cone. And if you can get gelato, even better! Especially when it’s 2 scoops for the price of 1!
After much deliberation, I went with a scoop of mango coconut and a scoop of green tea gelato. Nom nom!
Taking photos of ice cream cones when the sun is blazing is not an easy task. We won’t even talk about how much ice cream I ended up wearing in the process.
Once I made it back to Blackie Spit and my car, I figured it was time to end my fun in the sun and head on back across the river. I knew the trip would be slow, and needed to make it home in time for the Top Chef Canada finale! But not before a few last photos..
It was just what I needed to renew my mind and body before heading back to work this week, and a great way to kick off summer. I’m going to try and make a point of getting out and about Metro Vancouver this summer on my days off, exploring the gems I didn’t know existed.
Hopefully summer is in full swing where you are! Get out and enjoy it before it’s gone 🙂
