Things I’m Loving

My world has been engulfed by a storm of negativity lately, so I thought I’d put the power of positive thinking to work and share some of the things I’m loving right now.

1. Avocado smashed on toast

So simple, so delicious. Toast your bread of choice – perhaps a sprouted grain bagel, or hearty artisan bread. Smash as much avocado as you’d like on said toast and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack.

If only avocados didn’t cost a fortune around here – the damn things went up to $2.50 each in my store! Hence why I eat 1/4 at a time, to make it last a little longer.

2. Jewels

IMG_1412

No, not jewellery (although, if someone wanted to buy me something shiny, I wouldn’t complain). I’m talking about this little game I downloaded on my phone. I love me a good puzzle game, and this one fits the bill. So easy for me to lose copious amounts of time playing.

3. Foodie gifts

IMG_1363

I had already told you about the plethora of cheese bestowed upon me. But that’s not the only foodie gift that has found its way to me.

IMG_1404

Yesterday my sister sent over 3kg of honey from her boyfriend’s uncle’s bee farm. Just think of all the baked goods I can sweeten with that! Perhaps I should make another plum cake?

IMG_1418

I also have this box of cookbooks sitting in my mom’s sewing room, just waiting for me to go through them. One of her friends was cleaning out her cupboards, and decided she didn’t want these anymore. She figured since I’m such a cookbook hoarder, I might like to pick out some. Unfortunately they came to me while I was neck deep in school, and I kinda forgot about them. But I’m thinking it will make a great summer project – especially with gems like this.

Cooking electrically? How novel an idea! (Hey, it’s circa 1959)

4. Cute shoes

IMG_1409

A few months back I saw this great deal for some cute Colourful Grass shoes from Nice Shoes on Ethical Deal Vancouver, so I picked one up. I figured even if they shoes weren’t amazing, they were cheap enough I wouldn’t be too upset. Turns out they are awesome – cute, comfortable, and ecologically friendly!

IMG_1406

One more glamour shot…because I want to show off my pasty white feet. Oh, and the shoes.

IMG_1408

It was hard to decide on which style when I went to pick up my shoes – I had two I was choosing between. The deciding factor ended up being which pair they had in my size. I knew I would need to go back at some point in time to get the other pair, even if I had to pay full price. So imagine my delight when I saw today’s Ethical Dealmore Colourful Grass shoes, directly from the company this time. I’m totally getting these red beauties – so cute! And the button is made of coconut!

PS – The shoe deal is on for another 6 days. If you live in Canada, you should pick one up. Shipping for the shoes is only $5!

5. My fingernails

IMG_1398

I’m not sure what I’ve been doing different, but my fingernails have been growing amazingly lately. Usually they start to tear or break by this length, especially with the amount I’ve been working. But nope, they are all still strong and long (please ignore my hideous cuticles). I keep thinking I should trim them, because they are almost getting too long, but it seems like such a shame. Watch, I’ll totally break one as I finish typing this post.

6. Summer fruit

IMG_1401

Local BC raspberries have finally made their appearance, and I couldn’t be happier. I could probably sit down and eat my weight in these red jewels. I love how raspberries are just a little tart. Divine.

I’ve also been coveting the local BC cherries that have arrived, but the price keeps me from indulging…I’ll give in eventually. I did pick up a new to me summer fruit though…

IMG_1393

Donut or saturn peaches! What can I say, I’m a sucker for different or weird looking fruit.

IMG_1396

I’m actually not a big peach fan, only because of the fuzz, but these were on sale, and some customers told me they are really good, so I figure I can’t knock them til I try them. I’ll figure out a way to use them I’m sure – maybe with all that honey?

7. My fur baby – Sienna

Because even when things are the shits, you always know your fur baby will be there for you.

What are you loving right now?

Saturn Peaches?!?! The look amazing! Perhaps you could bake them into a fruit crisp — it usually takes the fuzz away. Penny says “heeeeeeeeerrrrrrroooooo Sienna!”. She loves cats. For real.

‘They’ look amazing. Not ‘the’. Oops.

I’ve never tried donut peaches, but I keep seeing them at the store. Your look perfectly ripe!

Avocado and bread is one of my favourite breakfasts! Random I know but it’s a Latin American thing! 😉

Hey Marianne! Love how you can pick out the positives, when other stuff may not be going well.

I have yet to find the donut peaches – but I am with you, I don’t like the skin of peaches, so I usually peel them.

Now I need to try avocado on toast!

I am loving the summer heat, the seasonal fruits and veggies, the longer days, and WATERMELON! Can’t get enough watermelon in my belly these days! LOL
