A Little Bit Of This, A Little Bit Of That

Can you believe it’s October 1st already? Didn’t September just start?! Where does the time go…

My Saturday evening has been spent doing various school-related tasks, some which involve scouring for autumn-themed recipes in my vast cookbook collection.

See, sometimes homework isn’t all bad.

And I’ve had my favourite furry study buddy here to keep me company.

Always giving the camera stink eye, I tell ya.

But I thought I would take a little break from all the festivities, and share some random food, events, and whatnot. Because who doesn’t like a mish mosh of randomness every know and then?

Let’s start with my lunch today. It saw the return of a favourite – tempeh bacon!

I was at a loss come lunch time with what to make. Then I remembered I had a package of this smoky, savoury delight hiding in my fridge. I considered going wild and crazy with an Elvis-inspired grilled pb, banana, and tempeh bacon sandwich, but wanted to also make kale chips, and thought that combination to be a little too…uncomplimentary for my tastes.

So instead I went with a riff on my TLAP Sandwich – tempeh, avocado, aged white cheddar, sweet pickles, spinach, mayo, grainy mustard all on sprouted grain bread.

IMG_1365It just oozes health nut hippy, doesn’t it?

Hmmm…what else. Oh yeah – I have been bestowed with a gently loved Jack Lalanne juicer. I’m kinda excited.

I just cleaned it, so it’s ready and waiting for some juicy action. Please share your favourite juice recipes with me, because you know I’ll be playing with this toy for awhile.

I’m working on a social media outreach project for a local RD name Lori Petryk. She runs the Good For You, Good For Our Earth website, where she posts weekly TV segments (they also run on Shaw TV) showcasing her visits to local farms, food producers, and foodie events. The site and her videos are a great way to learn about local producers in the Metro Vancouver area. Like did you know there is a winery making walnut wine here? I didn’t until I saw the video. And she has a segment on a local chocolate company coming up. Mmmm, chocolates. If you get a chance, check out the website, videos, and the Good For You, Good For Our Earth Facebook page.

PS – while you are on Facebook, maybe you could also go and like the French Fries To Flax Seeds page as well 😉

Speaking of videos, you can watch the documentary Food Matters for free online this week (October 2nd – 8th, 2011). You just need to go here and sign up. Looks like it will be interesting.

And there is a fun looking event going on in Vancouver tomorrow that I wish I could attend (alas, I am working) called Taste of Health. It runs from 11:30 am to 6 pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre, and tickets are only $5! That’s a steal as far as I’m concerned. There will be exhibitors, cooking demonstrations, guest speakers, and more. Really wishing I hadn’t taken than extra shift at work…

So that my friends, is my random assortment of food related news for you today. I’m going back to my school work while Miss Sienna ensures I stay on task.

Hi! I just found your blog and it looks awesome. (Are you studying at UBC, btw?) And, I love your philosophy on food! I really like the ‘eat to feel good’ part and I never really thought of it that way. It is perfect. 🙂

    Hi Marianne,

Chanced upon you blog. I don’t really know how I got here but glad to have clicked on whatever link I had. Love the blog and keep posting entries such as this. I think anything with carrot is just amazing. I mix it up with oranges, mango, apple and everything. 🙂 Thanks for this new idea.

I used to think health nuts were just that until I became one and then decided they were OK.
