I just enjoyed a delightfully indulgent foodie weekend. Well, perhaps weekend is a bit of a lie – I had Saturday off, worked Sunday, then had Monday off – but whatever, it’s a close to a weekend as I get these days! The fact that I had a whole Saturday free to do what I pleased was the amazing part, and what prompted me to indulge in a plethora of culinary treats!
It started off Saturday morning with a trip to the Trout Lake Farmer’s Market – my first farmer’s market of the year!
Keeping in mind the fact that I am living on my own again, I made sure not to go too hog wild with all the fresh local produce available. I did pick up two bunches of beets, a zucchini, oyster mushrooms, garlic scapes (simply because I was amazed they were still around!), and my absolute favourite summer fruit…fresh raspberries.
Of course, I had to pick up a few baked treats as well. Here we have a nutella brioche(!) and a carrot cake cream cheese muffin, both from Pure Bread in Whistler. The carrot cake muffin was good, but too greasy, while the nutella brioche was as awesome as it sounds.
I made a stop over at Whole Foods afterwards, to pick up a few random things – ginger beer, kombucha, power energy squares (I think that’s what they are called), and Larabars.
I also found myself in possession of fresh apricots and rainier cherries, direct from the Okanagan, courtesy of my most wonderful boyfriend. Does he know me or what?
Speaking of cherries…they were on sale for an insane price at my store this week, so I may have bought 6 lbs or so.
And to repay the boyfriend’s generosity, I stopped by the fancy liquor store and picked up some interesting brews for him to try out. Okay, so I kinda want to know what they taste like too, but I can never drink more than a few sips of any beer, so I guess it’s a treat for both of us.
It wasn’t all about shopping for treats though – I also got busy creating things in the kitchen!
I tried out a new salmon recipe (seeing as fresh wild sockeye was on sale this week at work), from a new to me Canadian foodie magazine.
I enjoyed more than a few cherries as is…
…and pitted the rest to stock my freezer.
I turned those garlic scapes into a rich, flavourful pesto (recipe to come).
I tested out this new (to me) kombucha flavour – Synergy Maqui Berry Mint. Loved the mint with the acidic kombucha flavour. It might even be my new favourite.
And last, but certainly not least…
…I tested out a new muffin recipe. Good, but not perfect. Once it is, I’ll let you know.
