Apple Bacon Cheddar Scones


It’s hip. It’s trendy. It’s salty and delicious (unless you are a weirdo like my sister – but she also thinks peanut butter, pizza, and gravy aren’t good either). Sure, it’s fatty and not exactly the healthiest food you can choose, but a little goes a long way. And it just so happened I found 4 lonely pieces shoved to the back of my fridge. Fortunately, they were still good. So I cooked them up, and found those bacon slices some friends.


Apples, bacon, and cheddar – oh my! It all makes sense in that salty-sweet kinda way.


As tasty as it would have been to mix the three together, call it a salad, and eat it as is, I decided to turn them into some flaky, buttery scones.


I don’t make scones nearly enough (because of my muffin baking addiction), but they really are almost as easy as making muffins. Plus they just seem so much more…fancy. Sophisticated. Something you would have with your afternoon high tea.


Anyone know what kind of tea pairs well with bacon?


Apple Bacon Cheddar Scones

makes 16

Satisfy your salty-sweet craving with these flaky, buttery scones. Featuring smoky bacon, sweet apples, and salty cheddar, they would be great addition to a brunch, excellent alongside your favourite soup, or an interesting accompaniment to your afternoon tea.


  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup grated old cheddar (orange is prettier, but white works too)
  • 1/2 gala apple, diced
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked til crisp and crumbled
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg, beaten

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Combine flours, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl and mix well.

3. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or even your fingertips, cut in the butter until you get a coarse meal.

4. Stir in cheddar, apple, and bacon to coat.

5. Add buttermilk to mixture, and mix until just combined – it should form a ball of dough you can work with.

6. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, and divide into 2 equal parts. Roll each into a circle, approximately 1 cm thickness.

7. Cut each round into 8 wedges, and transfer to baking sheet. Brush generously with beaten egg.

8. Bake 15 min, or until lightly browned. Enjoy warm, or cool freeze extras for later.

Note: Be sure to use an old/aged cheddar for maximum flavour. Low fat or mild cheeses aren’t going to cut it.

    YUM! I’m not a big meat eater, but bacon I could NOT give up!!! 🙂 These scones are a great idea and I think even Noah, who “hates” apples, would love them.
